Get groceries, make meals, wash the dishes, clean the body, exercise the body, heal the body, socialise, earn money, pay taxes and utilities, do repairs&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Overheads are universal to any human. The 2nd law of thermodynamics can be boiled down to this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The complexity of matter deteriorates gradually over time. If left untouched, everything evolves naturally into disorder. A rock erodes to grains and finally to dust. Entropy is a measure of that disorder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple English:<\/strong> Everything goes to \ud83d\udca9 given enough time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>These overheads delay the natural increase in entropy. If you skip them, one way or another, your quality of life degrades, then your mental and physical health, and eventually you die \u2014 sooner than you would otherwise. You are part of the Universe, hence you can\u2019t escape Physics!<\/p>\n<h3>Life is like riding a bicycle<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diogonunes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/4819689078_31b1db17f6.jpg?resize=500%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diogonunes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/4819689078_31b1db17f6.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.diogonunes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/4819689078_31b1db17f6.jpg?resize=400%2C240&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You put in some effort pedalling and the bicycle will move forward for a bit. While it is moving forward, you don\u2019t need to pedal, so you enjoy the view. Then you go back to pedalling some more, and so on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The pedalling is the work, the overhead.<\/p>\n<p>The view is the pleasure, the joy of living.<\/p>\n<p>You know you&#8217;re doing something wrong if you have to pedal for most of the trip. Either <strong>(1)<\/strong> the bicycle does not multiply your effort, <strong>(2)<\/strong> your pedalling is not strong enough, or <strong>(3)<\/strong> your terrain is too steep.<\/p>\n<h3>Stop<\/h3>\n<p>How much time do you spend working? And upkeeping your life? And resting? How much time is left after that? <strong>That&#8217;s the actual time that you live.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Optimistic math: work 8h, commute 3h, eat 2h, upkeep 1h, rest 8h<\/p>\n<p>= 2h per workday of &#8220;free&#8221; living<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Time really is precious, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<h3>Do the math<\/h3>\n<p>Approximately, a year has 52 weeks. Let\u2019s say in your country there are 13 bank holidays. Let\u2019s assume you\u2019re lucky and all of them are effective and happen during a workday. And let\u2019s say you also have 22 days of vacation given by your employer.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>(52 * 5) = 260 max workdays in a year<\/p>\n<p>260d &#8211; 13d holidays &#8211; 22d vacations = 225 min workdays a year<\/p>\n<p>Best case scenario, you spend ~62% of each year working.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, <strong>you live to work.<\/strong> If you trade all your time for money, you won&#8217;t have time to spend all that money.<\/p>\n<h3>Find a balance<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s now assume you don\u2019t work on Mondays, because who likes Mondays anyway? So subtract one day per week in the year, that\u2019s -52. <strong>By working one less day each week, you would work 47% of the year<\/strong>. Now that\u2019s a better balance! And it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JHN5PX\">not a new idea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;But I can&#8217;t spare one day of salary every week&#8221;, you might say.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Remember the bicycle analogy?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Change your bicycle\n<ul>\n<li><em>ie. find an income source that pays you more for the same effort<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Change your strength\n<ul>\n<li><em>ie. invest in training that makes you more proficient<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Change your terrain\n<ul>\n<li><em>ie. lower the cost of living and align your lifestyle with your goals<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Find what needs to change to free more <del>time<\/del> life to you. <strong>Every day that ends is time that you won&#8217;t get back.<\/strong> When are you going to enjoy it?
