One Direction encourages violence during courtship

Have you heard their song “Steal My Girl”? The video clip was directed by Danny DeVito and summed up 118 million views in six months. PETA already criticized the band for using a chimp trainer with “history of animal abuse”.

Well, that’s just the beginning of the abuse. Listen to the lyrics:

Find another one ’cause she belongs to me
I don’t exist if I don’t have her
She knows, she knows
That I’m never gonna let another take her love from me now

That’s not subliminal, that’s as explicit as it gets. That’s treating a human being as a thing, your greatest love as a possession. And in that last sentence they reveal the darkness of their heart, when they openly refer the fear and psychological repression in this relationship.

The video has 1.5 million likes, which means up to 1.5 million couples worldwide find One Direction’s aggressive words enjoyable or even agreeable. Singing a dreadful lyric just makes it more pleasant to the ear, however it doesn’t excuse the message.

Why so serious?

Boys desire girls. So if girls worship One Direction, boys will look up to them — dress like them, think like them. Girls set the trends and make the “market”.

You and I can’t let One Direction’s message get across unharmed, otherwise sentences like “she belongs to me” will become mundane and frequent. Eventually our brains stop noticing what we say and what we do, and it becomes an instinct. Prejudice works the same way.

Desensitization is defined as the diminished emotional responsiveness to a negative or aversive stimulus after repeated exposure to it. Wiki

Portugal has increasing rates of marital homicide, between 30 to 50 deaths per year. In my opinion, killing the person you supposedly love the most in the world, just because it doesn’t behave like a pet or an object, is the most sickening and coward crime of all.

In 2013, a national study interviewed more than 4500 young people aged between 13 and 29 years. Over 25% admitted he/she was a victim at least once during the previous year and almost 31% confessed to have abusive behavior towards his/her mate.

The average teenager doesn’t think of jealousy and control as an aggressive behavior. They think it’s a display of love. APAV

That’s the most worrying part — these young people tolerate their mates’ abusive behavior. Thus they will never free themselves from their soul mates aggressors. And as time goes by, they’ll marry, sacrifice their happiness, eventually (literally) sacrificing their life, and subject their children to the same abuse. #truestory

Therefore, Portugal started this year a campaign named “Love with fair play, Who loves you doesn’t hurt you” to get some common sense shared across these young and naive minds.

My advice is simple: at the first occurrence of any of these behaviors, let your friends and family know the real face of the aggressor, and walk away without hesitating for a moment. One doesn’t hurt by mistake, there’s no possible excuse. If you start to get stalked or threatened, report it the police and let them handle it. If they don’t, do whatever it takes to take back your life, which is much more valuable than his/her.
